Metformin does not appear (according to my researches) to be one of those drugs (like steroids), where it is essential that you come off very, very slowly. Some people, on some forums, have reported feeling unwell when they gave it up, but others have felt much better. A primary mode of action of metformin is increasing the sensitivity of the body's muscles, tissues and cells to insulin--a hormone that is essential for transporting glucose from the blood to the body. Whether or not to come off the met is a decision I can defer for the time being, and meanwhile the many prescriptions I have for other stuff remain free. LeeLee , Aug 28, 2013 11 If you can control your diabetes with just diet then good for you!!Once you get the carbs intake worked out and what foods you can eat then you are set.Just keep an eye on those readings,if you start to get higher readings then you maybe will have to go back on the Metformin again.Until then good luck with the diet. Can I come off metformin? Don’t stop taking metformin without talking to your doctor. If you stop taking metformin suddenly you may reduce the control over your diabetes. The most common medication worldwide for treating diabetes is metformin (Glumetza, Riomet, Glucophage, Fortamet). It can help control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. When I first got on it, I thought it was great. My blood sugar levels improved, my appetite was in fact curbed, and all seemed wonderful — until I stopped taking my metformin. The only problem is that I can't prove Metformin is causing this. The good news of course is that is hinders glucose production in your body. Last edited by Jwp; 2/25/08 at 06:53 PM. I was on Metformin for about three months, but after controlling my diet (through low-carbing) I was able to come off of it. Now I still get high BGs if I eat high carb foods, but can keep my level at anywhere from the mid-80s to the 110s, even post-prandial, as long as I watch what I eat (e.g., my fasting level this morning was 87). After a few months of really trying to stay on, I find that GERD has taken over and I must get off metformin. The pain is too great. So my questions is..do I have to wean off or can I just stop taking it.
